Following the news of Her Majesty The Queen’s death, The Bolton News has looked back at a couple of occasions she visited the town over the years.

Her Majesty first visited Bolton back in 1954, a year after her coronation, where the Royal Train pulled up into Trinity Street Station and then began a tour of Bolton.

Every time, the Queen was given a grand welcome from Bolton.

In 1988, Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Bolton as part of the town’s 150th birthday celebrations.

During this royal visit the Queen officially opened the £40m Market Place centre and the £5.5m Water Place.

This visit saw crowds turn out to catch a glimpse as Her Majesty helped the town celebrate an historic day for Bolton.

There was a team of 14 town hall and Bolton Metropolitan College catering staff who were beavering away to provide a banquet literally fit for a Queen.

Bolton Town Hall head chef Peter Taylor said was in charge of the Royal meal but it was not the first time Peter had cooked for Her Majesty.

He was one of the Territorial Army cooks who prepared the meal for her birthday celebrations in Berlin nine years previously.

The meal in Bolton included avocado pear Waldorf, supreme chicken stuffed with fresh asparagus, new potatoes and three salads.

The sweet was a fresh apricot tartlet with creme chantilly.

Students at Bolton School had the opportunity to watch the cavalcade some were in the orchestra playing for the royal visitors over lunch in the town hall.
