It is end of an era as a Bolton chip shop - which received national attention after appearing on the BBC - goes up for sale.

Rigby's Chippy will close in the coming months as owner, Margaret Rigby, puts it up for sale after 40 years in business.

The 80-year-old said it is with sadness she is selling up due to ill health.

Margaret said: "Everybody is going mad since I decided to close.

"I'm closing because I had a mini stroke and it has left me unable to walk and my balance keeps going, so it's just health problems. And because my daughter Andrea has her own shop now so she has got really busy and our Diane goes visiting her son in Cornwall, it's getting too much between them.

"So I thought right it's time to call it a day.

"I'm gutted, but I know I've got to do it, I never told anybody I was putting it up for sale, it was time to call it a day because I can't do anything.

"It's mainly due to ill health, I wish I could carry on.

"This week I've been crying over the Queen, crying over myself and what I've done and I decided it so quickly.

"I'm selling it but we are remaining open until it is sold.

"There is no fixed closing date.

"It would be silly if nobody thinks of keeping it as a chippy because it's kept me going for forty years.

"I've always had to have somebody working for me because my husband died in 1987 and we came in here in 1983 so really I was still getting used to what I had to do and everything and had to buckle on.

"I'm proud of all of them who have worked for me, they've all been good."

Rigby's is well-loved by many in the area and Bolton's Paddy McGuinness is also a big fan. He visited the chippy during filming for an episode of Top Gear.

Margaret said her customers want her to stay.

She said: "All my customers are going mad, everyone that comes in are like my friends so its been a big decision for me but I know I've got to do it, I'm 81 this year and it's been open for forty years.

"It's one big family here really and I will miss it."
