HOMEOWNERS in Bolton are asking more for their properties, despite the downward national trend in property prices.

A recent report by Nationwide Building Society revealed the value of homes across the UK fell for the fifth month in a row during March to £179,110.

However, according to the Rightmove House Price Index which records the asking prices of homes on the market, homeowners in Bolton have been demanding higher prices each month since January.

The property website found the average asking price for a house in March this year was £149,572, up 0.4 per cent on February.

But estate agents say the average sale prices remain reasonably steady.

Daniel Westwell, of Lamb and Swift property consultants at Wingates Industrial Estate, Westhoughton, said sellers are slowly becoming more realistic.

He said: "In general, the demand for property is not meeting the supply and as a result prices look to have fallen along with people's expectations.

"It all comes as a result of deteriorating affordability, higher interest rates and slow earnings growth."
