I was saddened by the recent letter which criticised the role of the mayor and which also appeared to criticise our present Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Ronson.

Unlike your previous correspondent, I am delighted to see pictures of our Mayor lighting up the pages of The Bolton News - in contrast to many news items which are often so depressing.

As an ordinary individual, I do not have access to the mayor's diary but I suggest that most, if not all, of the events attended are either in the daytime or evenings when there is no council business.

I'm sure special arrangements can be made when this not possible.

Furthermore, mayors do not attend these events by their own choice.

They are invited to attend by organisers who may wish to promote their charity, club or school, or perhaps celebrate a special event.

The mayor's presence enhances the occasion and acknowledges the importance of the event on behalf of the people of Bolton.

In my experience, the event organiser is responsible for covering the mayor's costs at the event, so the cost to the council tax payer is zero.

The mayor may often be required to attend several functions on the same day and may take the occasional social drink.

It is unreasonable for mayors to drive themselves.
