A CASH machine is to be installed at a post office in a bid to make it financially viable and help protect it from closure.

Bolton Council's planning committee has approved proposals to build an ATM machine outside the Bradshaw Post Office in Lea Gate.

Government statistics have revealed just 4,000 post offices of the 14,000 in existence are commercially viable.

Last month MPs voted to close more than 2,500 post office across the country.

Those facing the axe in Greater Manchester are due to be announced in June.

Cllr Walter Hall said at the planning meeting: "This ATM will help secure the financial viability of this post office. This added service would make this one, which is the only post office in Bradshaw, viable and ensure its future for many years to come.

"To keep post offices open is what we should be aiming for."
