A LOCAL post office dubbed "a lifeline to the community" is to close, after being denied a last-minute reprieve by the Government Turton post office was one of 24 in East Lancashire to be named on a list of those facing the axe by Whitehall.

It will cease to trade on May 8, despite pleas from local residents and intervention from local MP, Janet Anderson, who lodged a formal objection to the proposal.

The decision has angered councillors.

Graeme McIver, chairman of Turton Parish Council, said: "We are very disappointed by the decision. The nearest post office is in Edgworth, but the journey involves a very steep hill which will make it difficult for pensioners to get there unless they drive.

"This would only increase traffic on our roads, of which we already have enough. Turton post office is a lifeline to many people in the local community. Hundreds will be affected."

The post office counter is open part time and is run from local gift shop and cafe, Blue at Turton Bottoms, at 87 Wellington Road. The gift shop will remain open despite the closure.
