Part of Westhoughton is without power after a fault at a substation.
Around 220 properties are affected by the power cut which started at 1.50pm.
United Utilities is aware of the problem and is working on restoring power.
Christian Ewen, a spokesman for the company, said: "We do not know what caused the fault as our main priority has been to work towards getting customers back on supply as quickly as possible.
"Our engineers are investigating the cause of the fault and a generator has been arranged to be brought out to site to restore supplies to the 222 customers affected in the area.
"We are expecting to have customers back on supply via the generator by 8.30pm this evening.
"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."
