A GROUP of youngsters are campaigning for drivers to slow down on a road near their youth club.

Members of the Bolton Lads and Girls Club in Spa Road launched the campaign after one of their volunteer workers was knocked down by a car.

Flo Rigby, who has managed the tuck shop twice a week since retiring more than 15 years ago, spent four days in hospital after the incident in December.

Although there was no question of speeding in that case, the youngsters fear that one day a child could be involved in an accident.

They made placards with slogans such as "Keep your eyes on the road" and "Kill your speed", as well as creating dummy speed-cameras and road markings.

Then 30 teenagers staged a demonstration outside the club. Phil Marsh, one of the organisers, said: "Flo is a very popular lady and when the young people heard what happened, they wanted to do something. The accident was just before Christmas and it shocked everyone, but Flo is all right now, fortunately."

He added: "Within the club we do a lot of work about road safety and this project enhanced this.

"I think there should be a speed camera on the road. A lot of drivers use it as a cut-through to Chorley New Road and Deane, and when it is quiet in the evenings they go at speeds of up to 60 mph.

"We had a good response to our demonstration, with a lot of drivers slowing down and beeping their horns."

Cllr Nick Peel, Bolton Council's executive member for environment, said: "We have some money from the developers of apartments in Chorley Street and are hoping to use this for a pelican crossing in Spa Road.

"We always investigate complaints that are made to us by organisations or residents."
