A CONMAN who posed as a student to obtain almost £10,000 in loans has been ordered to pay back just £200.
Recovering heroin addict David Jones, aged 32, of Hardy Mill Road, Harwood, used the identities of his brother and a friend to con a student loans company on two separate occasions in 2005 and 2006.
He pleaded guilty to obtaining money by deception, attempting to obtain money by deception and making a false representation at a hearing at Bolton Crown Court in January.
Jones was given a nine-month jail sentence to be suspended for two years with two years supervision, and was ordered to attend a further drugs rehabilitation course.
He appeared at the court today for a hearing under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
The court heard that Jones had spent the money he stole on drugs and that he would only be capable of paying back £200.
Andrew Costello, defending, said: "He has recently been discharged from the detox unit and he is getting his affairs in order."
