In 1981 the admission charge for "a night of fun" at a Bolton discotheque was one toy.

And the Bolton Evening News story which accompanied this photograph continued: "And by the time the dance floor at the town centre, Cinderella Rockerfella's, was heaving, the night club staff had collected almost 300 toys, games and books on behalf of disabled children.

"The club is organising the Mayor's Toy Fair as an effort for the International Year of Disabled People, and the gala night was the first big effort.

"But club staff were so pleased with the response from disco-lovers that they are offering free mid-week admission to the club for the next three weeks - so long as customers produce a toy.

"Pictured with a giant shoe full of toys - which will later be distributed to Bolton's handicapped children - are disc jockey Gillie Beanz (right) and some of the club's regulars."

I remember, in my clubbing days, a few years before this was taken, that disco owners tried all sorts of ideas to get folk into their premises during the quiet mid-week period. One club charged a bar of soap, another a pair of old spectacles.

It got people in, to spend money on drinks, but helped a charitable cause at the same time.
