An appeal in the Bolton Evening News in 1985 for bicycles to help pupils at Lostock Open Air School, Bolton, met with a good response from readers.
The donated bikes were used to help the youngsters gain their Duke of Edinburgh Awards, which recognise participation in a variety of activities.
Testing out one of the bicycles at the front of the photograph was Simon Woodland, aged eight, watched by fellow pupils and staff.
The report said some youngsters had co-ordination and breathing problems, and cycling was particularly beneficial to them.
Through observing my grandson and his friends, it seems that a bike is the best way of encouraging them to take exercise. When walking, they saunter - but when riding a bike, they speed all over the place.
