A LEIGH takeaway has been slapped with a new zero-out-of-five hygiene rating.

Mum's Indian Kitchen on Chapel Street, Leigh, was given the minimum score after an assessment on August 18, the Food Standards Agency's website shows.

From a score of zero to five, food hygiene ratings are given to food handling businesses after an inspection has assessed how well they comply with food safety laws.

The rating reflects the standards of food hygiene found on the date of the inspection by the local authority.

The assessment at Mum's Indian Kitchen found that urgent improvement is necessary for its hygienic food handling, the cleanliness and condition of the building, and the management of food safety.

A zero food hygiene rating also suggests that the business could be putting people's health at immediate risk.

The rating is a significant fall in standards as the business was given a four-star rating on its previous inspection in August 2020, when trading as Indian Kitchen Leigh.

However, its new rating makes it the only business out of 319 takeaways across the Wigan borough to receive a zero hygiene rating.

Angelo's Takeaway, also on Chapel Street, was previously the borough's lowest-rated takeaway on the Food Standards Website following an inspection in June.

However, the takeaway business improved to a one-star rating on their re-inspection in August.

Mum's Indian Takeaway will be given chance to improve its hygiene standards and will likely be re-inspected in the coming months.
