They may be only nursery age, but these children are an example to us all when it comes to going green to save the environment.

For the children at Eagley School House Nursery 2 not only recycle, they watch their energy usage and grow there own food

And their hard work to tackle the big environmental issues, has paid off, after they were awarded an international eco accreditation.

Pupils worked with Eco-Schools coordinator Jackie Birks to conduct an environmental review, assessing how eco-friendly their nursery is.

Everything from the nursery’s recycling practices, to energy usage, to how environmental themes are covered in children’s rooms were looked at.

The pupils and Jackie planned a year of activities, which has earned them the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award.

Jackie said: “Despite their youth, our nursery children are fascinated by environmental issues, such as global warming and embrace activities which help to find solutions.

“They have had great fun growing their own food and flowers from seed and have taken this knowledge home, influencing their families to grow more plants, recycle and save energy.”

The group focused their Eco-Schools topics on waste, global sustainability, and healthy living.

Their activities included recycling all cooked and raw food waste to make compost, growing vegetables and flowers from seeds, raising funds by textile recycling, to support polar bears with the World Wildlife Fund, and saving rainforest with the World Land Trust.

In addition, all children participated in global events such as Earth Day, to improve their local environment.

Lauren Seals, mum to five-year-old Lennon, added: “Lennon is aware of climate change and can articulate how he can have an impact on the environment.

“As a result, he takes part in local litter-picking, enjoys growing his own fruit and vegetables, and since being on the nursery’s Eco Committee, he ensures we turn the lights off when  we are not in and recycle all of our household waste.”

Eco-Schools England Manager, Adam Flint, said: “Earning an Eco-Schools Green Flag Award takes passion, commitment and a desire to make a difference.

“Pupils should be proud of their great work.

“They’re an inspiration and it makes us feel heartened and positive about the future of our planet.”
