A man was found dead by a passer-by as he walked through a local nature reserve.

Daniel McNally discovered the man whilst walking through a Darcy Lever Gravel Pits on Sunday, September 25.

He says he discovered the man at around 12.45pm.

Daniel said: "As soon as I realised the situation I cut him down and rang 999 and gave CPR for about 10-15 minutes until the emergency services arrived and took over.

"Sadly there was nothing that could be done for the gentleman." 

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that officers were called to the Gravel Pits at 12.52pm to  'a male found hanging'.

He added: "North West Ambulance Service were also there and performed CPR but to no avail.

"The body was then safely removed."

North West Ambulance Service confirmed that they were called to the scene at 12:55pm.

Cllr Sean Hornby of Little Lever and Darcy Lever said: "I learnt about the situation after it happened.

"It’s very, very sad. Whatever the situation was. He leaves people behind.

"Also, for the person who found him it must have been distressing.

"My deepest condolences go out to the person’s family."
