A Bolton MP joined a Macmillan Coffee Morning at Market Place to show her support and is encouraging her constituents to do the same.

People and organisations up and down the country hosted coffee morning events in a bid to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

One in two people will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, and Macmillan nurses support people living with the disease from the moment they are diagnoses.

The funds gathered also go towards maintaining the Macmillan Support Line – a team at the end of the phone who providing confidential guidance and support.

The official date this year was Friday September 30 and coffee mornings took place over the weekend.

Macmillan support people with cancer to live fully, whether that’s with physical concerns, how they feel, money worries, or something different altogether.

Much of this work is done by volunteers, and the cancer charity relies almost entirely on public donations to make a difference.

The very first Coffee Morning was a small get together in 1990, and since then over £290m has been raised via the scheme.

Last year, over £11m was raised for the charity, and the aim is to top that this year. So far over £1.3m has been donated this year – enough to fund 21 Macmillan nurses for a year.

Bolton South East MP Yasmin Qureshi said: “The work Macmillan do to support families affected by cancer is second to none. They provide an arm around the shoulder when needed and offer practical support.

“I was especially touched when speaking to volunteers who have been impacted by cancer and learning how it has affected their life was an eye-opening experience but also one which I could relate to.

“When my own mum was diagnosed with bowel cancer, they reached out to me directly and were incredibly supportive and helpful and for that I will be eternally grateful.”

Nicola Barrett, marketing manager at Market Place, said: “It is both a pleasure and a privilege to help host this get together.

“We really appreciate the skilled, sensitive and compassionate work the Macmillan team undertake and the immense value of the skill of their nurses.

“Being a location for this coffee morning allows members of the public to meet the team and raise valuable funds.”
