An engineer running around the world has finally hit the ground in Turkey while raising eyebrows with his buggy.

Mark Shuttleworth, from Harwood, has been running around the world since June.

The former engineer has made it to Turkey despite initial problems with crossing the border on foot due to the border control not allowing people to cross unless in a car.

Determined not to use any public transport, Mark simply ran to a different border to get in.

While running to Vukosinovac, the 39-year-old said: “Made it! This was hard though. Made sure I went slow again but I was tired right from the off.

“Slow and steady doesn’t win any races but it does help you get across a continent.

“I had a bit of an energy revival in the middle, but it soon disappeared and the last hour or so was horrendous and the sun had come out adding to my pain.

“I looked like a zombie in the end plodding into Nis.”

Along the route, Mark tracks his progress on Strava and on his website where he often leaves commentary on his runs as well as what he thinks of the areas he is passing through.

With his feet firmly on the ground in Turkey, the only eyebrow raising thing is seeing a man with a baby buggy running at pace.

While running through Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mark said: “Some steep climbs today too and near the end was on trail, which was slow going with the buggy - it would have been quite slow going without it too.”

Apart from the strong heat of Europe around this time, Mark has ran into problems with the buggy himself as the tyres keep running flat and he is forced to stop and fix it.

Mark uses the buggy to carry most of his luggage.

His sister, Fiona Hamer said: “Last time I spoke to him he said he was doing well but it was a bit hot, and he was trying to stay hydrated.

“He definitely gets strange looks from people asking, ‘where is the baby?’”
