One of Bolton's historic halls has been targeted by vandals and flytippers.

Hall i'th' Wood Museum had a windows smashed and rubbish, including duvet dumped in its grounds.

Now Bolton Council which run the building, is sending out enforcement officers to the site.

Nearby residents were shocked to see the state of the  16th century building.

Samuel Crompton, who invented the Spinning Mule which revolutionised the cotton industry, lived there with his parents.

Visitors to the Grade I building can learn about life under the Stuarts and the Tudors, with Bolton Libraray and Museum Services often holding interactive events for families at the site.

The building is currently closed for essential maintenance.

Piotr Halama, who spotted the rubbish, said: “Hall i'th' Wood Museum has been around since forever, well almost forever, but now its been shut down for maintenance with smashed windows and completely littered.

“With signs all around the museum saying it is closed for maintenance you can clearly see windows on the side being smashed, has Bolton really come to leaving a historical house in ruins?

“Well it seems so as there have been mattresses left all around the area simply dumped ruining the nice view down into the forest and into the museum, which you can't see anyways as its once again been closed and left."

Bolton Council confirmed it had removed this litter and would send an officer to ensure it was not repeated.

A spokesperson for the local authority said: “Volunteers moved some waste that had been deposited at the location last week.

“The council is not aware of any more recent incidents but we will send an enforcement officer to the location to check .”
