There is risk of flooding amid predicted thunderstorms today in Bolton, the MET Office warns.

A yellow warning for thunderstorms has been given as grey clouds shadow most of the day with heavy rain on its way.

The MET Office forecasts the warning to last until 1pm this afternoon with highs of 13 degrees being reached.

Rain is predicted to fall from 12pm with various intervals throughout the day lasting till 7pm.

A spokesman for the MET Office said: “There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

“Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

“Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

“There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.”

There are places in Bolton at risk of flooding, including in Horwich last year when over 100 propeties were damaged in torrential downpours.

The Environment Agency had recommended to put precautions in place at Nellies Clough, St Leonard’s Avenue, and Bessy Brook to reduce flood risks.

But despite the rain, the temperature will remain quite mild as the MET Office explained: “Because of that warmer air for the next several days, it’s going to be warmer than average by day and particularly warmer than average across the south at night.

“Between these weather fronts, there will, at times, be spells of sunshine and when the sun is out it’s going to feel quite mild.”

Currently Old Station Park in Bolton is undergoing work in a flood alleviation scheme which will act as a barrier to flood water and protect many homes.

There are no warnings in place for tomorrow although, the rain will continue to pour for the rest of the week.

Forecasters have already predicted that the UK winter will be mostly full of rain following a very hot summer.
