A new war memorial in Over Hulton will see its first public Act of Remembrance this Sunday.

During the summer local volunteers, with the blessing of the local church created new war memorial to remember those who gave their lives in defence of our freedoms.

It provides a new space and focal point for the community to come together during the time of remembrance and for local people to pay their respects to the dedication of those who have and continue to serve the Armed Forces.

Cllr Toby Hewitt said: “I would like to thank members of the local community, groups and the church for giving this opportunity to local residents.

“It has been a pleasure for the local team to support the effort.

“I would like to pay particular respects to Stuart Braddock, Dorothy Syddall, and Stephen Bryan who have helped push through the work.

“Getting the work going and helping them clear the garden space was great.

“The donations of stone for the local area really helped get the war memorial in place and it was a great effort by the team.”

The work has been funded by support from local volunteers and supported from local Councillors Shafi Patel and Derek Bullock in the Area Forum.

Cllr Hewitt added: “This work supports our ongoing work raising funds for the Royal British Legion locally via our ‘Lamp Post Poppy Appeal’ where local people have been making a suggested donation of £5 per poppy to sponsor them on local lamp posts during the time of remembrance.”

The local appeal has gone from strength to strength since starting in 2018 and has continued gaining more support even through the pandemic response.
