A woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a fall from a motorway bridge.

Emergency services including an air ambulance were scrambled to the scene, with the helicopter landing on the M60.

Thi incident occured between junctions 16, Clifton Interchange, and junction 17, Whitefield Interchange.

Police shut the motorway in both directions for a while.

North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) dispatched two rapid response vehicles, an ambulance, and an air ambulance, which landed on the clockwise carriage way.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: "We were called out to the M60 between junctions 16 and 17 clockwise.

"The call came in at 12.18pm to reports that someone had fallen from a bridge.

"The resources sent included two response vehicles, one ambulance and a helicopter.

"The patient was transferred to hospital in an ambulance."

A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson added: "Police were called at around 12.12pm on Thursday, November 10, 2022, to reports for concern for welfare of a woman on the M60 on the anti-clockwise carriageway at junction 17.

"NWAS attended and the woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries."

The road was closed for approximately an hour on the clockwise side.

The anticlockwise carriage way was also shut down for a short time.

The closures caused congestion on a number of major roads nearby, including the M62, M61 and A666 St Peter's Way, and the M602 Eccles Interchange.
