Bolton-born BBC Radio 2 DJ Sara Cox was forced to cut a caller off prematurely after they swore during a live broadcast.

Cox was hosting her regular drivetime slot on the popular radio show, which takes place weekdays from 4pm until 7pm.

During her "All Requests Friday" show, she invites listeners to call in and request a song to be played over the airwaves.

One guest, Jesse Manton from Devon, called up in a somewhat jovial mood, saying it was a “bloody brilliant” afternoon.

He told Cox of his plans to go out with his children, “but the lads are going to rule this weekend”.

“Sometimes you've got to prioritise the lads and bin the kids off," he added.

Perhaps this should have been something of a red flag but Cox persisted.

Jesse then left the host stunned when after chsosing ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ by Queen, he divulged the inspiration for his choice.

“…because Matt Hancock’s a c***,” he said.

Despite her shock, Cox’s consummate professionalism kicked in.

She said: “OK, so we’ve got to cut him off there.

"This is live radio. This kind of thing happens. I can only apologise if you’ve got children listening in the car.

“I’m going to play the tune – huge apologies. It is live, and here’s the song."

After the incident, many on social media were quick to praise Cox for her professionalism.

One said: “Sara Cox is an utter pro.”

While another commented: “Can’t get over how well Sara Cox handled someone saying c*** on live radio to be honest.”

Another listener said: “Well done Sara Cox - that was a masterclass in radio. You never missed a beat.

“It's not big, it's not clever and I hope he doesn't have kids himself.”
