A suspected drug driver has been arrested after a crash at a major interchange.

The crash took place at the Orrell Interchange in Wigan in the early hours of Saturday and as a result, North West Motorway Police have wanted the route to the east side was closed.

No injuries have been reported but the crash is likely to cause congestion in the roads around Wigan, Bolton and elsewhere.

A North West Motorway Police spokesperson said: “Due to a road traffic collision there is currently no route from the east side of Orrell Interchange to the west (M6sb/A577 to the M58).

“This likely to be the case for most of the morning to allow recovery and repairs to be carried out.

“The driver was uninjured but was arrested for drug driving.”

No other damaged to any other vehicles has been reported but officers have warned that the ‘protracted recovery’ of the overturned lorry is likely to take some time as Saturday unfolds.

A statement from Transport for Greater Manchester said: "Due to an overturned HGV, there is no access to the M58 westbound from the A577 Orrell Road or M6 southbound.

"Traffic for the M58 westbound may use M6 and turn at Junction 24 or divert via A577, Upholland to M58 Junction 5."

Officers have not reported if any other vehicles aside from the lorry are believed to have been involved.

Any witnesses or anyone with any information can call Greater Manchester Police on 101.

In the event of an emergency, witnesses have been urged to always call 999 as soon as possible.
