Bolton's Mayor was presented with a red rose celebrating Lancashire Day.

Long serving councillor Cllr John Walsh read out the Lancashire proclamation outside the Town Hall before handing the ‘red rose’ to Cllr Zaman Akhtar.

Lancashire Day is celebrated on November 27 across the county to commemorate the day in 1295 when Lancashire sent its first representatives to Parliament.

The proclamation was read out at 1.30pm.

The Bolton News:

Cllr Walsh read out loud: “Know ye that this day, November 27th in the year of our Lord Two Thousand and Twenty Two, the 1st year of the reign of His Majesty King Charles II, Duke of Lancaster, is –

“Know ye also, and rejoice, that by virtue of His Majesty's County Palatine of Lancaster, the citizens of the Hundreds of Lonsdale, North and South of the Sands, Amounderness, Leyland, Blackburn, Salford and West Derby are forever entitled to style themselves Lancastrians.

“Throughout the County Palatine, from the Furness Fells to the River Mersey, from the Irish Sea to the Pennines, this day shall ever mark the people's pleasure in that excellent distinction - true Lancastrians, proud of the Red Rose and loyal to our Sovereign Duke.”

It has become customary to celebrate the day with proud Lancastrians still marking the occasion in Bolton, despite the town being pushed into Greater Manchester under local government reorganisation of the 1970s.

The proclamation serves as a reminder that Bolton remains in county of Lancashire.

The Mayor of Bolton is also preparing for the Albet Halls Christmas Fair next week on December 3.
