Slippery rails led to the cancellation of multiple trains running through Bolton tonight.

Train company Northern confirmed that the Clitheroe to Rochdale line, which runs through Bolton, was blocked tonight (Monday) due to a slippery rail between Blackburn and Clitheroe.

Northern advised that train services running through those stations wouldbe cancelled or delayed by up to an hour.

The train operator have confirmed that all lines have now reopened after the issues.

As of just after 7:15pm tonight, Northern reported that Network Rail were due on site shortly.

The 18:23 Clitheroe to Rochdale train was reported as being delayed at Whalley Station and the 19:08 Clitheroe to Rochdale was being delayed at Clitheroe Station.

Slippery rails are caused by trains passing over fallen leaves on the rails, with the heat and weight of the trains creating a thin, slippery layer on the rail.

Network Rail say that this is the equivalent of black ice on the roads.
