A disused activity centre in Bury could be transformed into a community events space and holiday homes

The Burrs Activity Centre, which has been left unused since 2017, could receive a new lease of life according to a request submitted to the council by the Lamppost Café, an adjoining business at Burrs Country Park.

The café owners, who occupy part of the same building as the former activity centre, have been working with the local authority to bring the whole of the premises back to life.

As part of their application they are asking to transform a room which formerly housed a climbing wall into a multi-use space fit for corporate hire, school trips, parties, and weddings as well as use by the Friends of Burrs.

The plans could also see part of the centre, which included a first floor "bunk house", turned into a Airbnb-style holiday apartment, available for short term lets.

The existing café, which has occupied part of the space since 2018, and the first floor meeting room in the building would be retained and it is hoped that the new space, called "The Barn", will also be allowed to serve food and drink, including alcohol.

The same building is also home to the Bury Canoe and Kayak Club, who have facilities on the ground floor.

In addition, the plans state that accessible facilities will be added to the ground floor of the building and a corridor widened to improve access for wheelchair users.

Although no additional car parking has been proposed, it is expected that spaces on Woodhill Road will be sufficient, but the council is preparing proposals to improve the access road adjacent to the building.

The plans are open to the public for consultation until the end of December, after which the application will be put to the council's planning committee, although this date is to be confirmed.
