Staff at a Bolton primary school were taken aback by the generosity of a student who wanted to help others.

St Stephen and All Martyrs CE Primary School in Darcy Lever recently held a maths competition for their Key Stage 1 pupils, who were asked to design and make a money box and state what they were saving for.

What staff did not  expect was for a Year One pupil, Henry Murphy, to design a moneybox to save for a basket of shopping for someone who was struggling.

Teachers touched by this act of kindness donated food and drink to create Henry’s money box, which was then donated to charity.

Year One teacher at St Stephen and All Martyrs’, Bethany Kendal, said:

“As part of our Maths Week at St Stephen and all Martyrs’ Church, a competition was organised throughout Key Stage 1. Children were asked to design and make a moneybox and indicate what they were saving for.

“We had lots of entries, each great in their own way, however one in particular stood out. A Year 1 child, Henry Murphy, designed a moneybox in the shape of a shopping basket, full of pictures of food and drinks.

“He said his wish was to save for a basket of shopping for someone who couldn’t afford it.”

She continued: “St Stephens’ staff were so moved by this and we decided to come together and donate different foods and drinks to make his money box come to life.

“Staff members took Henry to our local foodbank, Urban Outreach Bolton, so he could donate his Christmas wish. We are immensely proud of Henry’s caring attitude towards others, and his demonstration of our school motto – Achieve, Believe, Care.”

Urban Outreach is a Christian Charity providing holistic and person-centred support for some of the most disadvantaged, vulnerable and complex adults and young people in Bolton.
