The RSPCA started an investigation after a dead dog was discovered dumped in a suitcase in Clifton.

A member of the public came across the sad scene in a wooded area close to Malcolm Drive on December 16.

The dead dog, a boxer cross with a brown and white coat, had its head hanging out of the suitcase, which was close to car park on a housing estate.

It had blood in its mouth and an enlarged stomach, although the cause of its death is still unknown at this time.

The Bolton News:

RSPCA animal rescue officer Jess Pierce, who is involved in the investigation, said the circumstances meant the case is to be treated as suspicious.

Ms Pierce said: "It does look strange the way this poor dog has been left with her head protruding out of the suitcase in a remote location, which raises suspicions as to how the pet died."

She added: "It is horrible a dog was left in this state the week before Christmas and we would like to trace her owners or anyone who might know how she came to be where she was found."

"It may be that her owner could not afford to take her to the vets or dispose of her body properly because of cost of living issues. But, if that was the case, then there is no need to take such a drastic course of action as there is help and advice available from the RSPCA and a number of other charities about veterinary costs and end-of-life decisions."

The RSPCA said it has seen a rise in abandonments, which the charity sees a result of the cost of living crisis.

Back in September, an American Bulldog was discovered dumped in a pushchair in an alleyway between Jauncey Street and Parkinson Street in Deane.
