More calls have been made to install signs to deter heavy goods vehicles from a narrow estate in Westhoughton.

Hazel Dawn Darlington who lives on Bamber Croft – a small street just off the A6 in Westhoughton – previously told The Bolton News that most recently HGV were being sent down the residential street via a satnav to get to Wingates Industrial Estate, which is not a through road.

And now Graham Pollitt – who lives less than a five-minute drive away on the junction of Anderby Walk and Wellington Street – says himself and other residents have been campaigning for years to get signs up due to getting a lot of artic lorries.

He said: “The pavements can’t take the big artics.

“It is really important to get signs because where my house is on the corner there are loads of kids."

Graham also says that the drivers sat nav is sending them on this route to also get to the industrial estate.

He says that it is possible for cars to cut through James Street to get to the industrial estate, but that the road is too narrow for HGV’s or big lorrys.

Graham added: “The size of the wagons ruins the pavements, and it is impossible for them to turn round.”

In June or July, he said that due to the road being so narrow a large artic burst a water mains pipe, spilling out on to the pavement.

He also says that the large vehicles have also crashed into a residents vehicle before and damaged a lamp post.

Cllr Andrea Finney - who represents Westhoughton North and Chew Moor - says she is aware of the issue regarding HGVs turning into Wellington Street (just off Church Street) after receiving numerous complaints from residents.

She has now raised the concerns with the Highways department and portfolio holder Cllr Stuart Haslam, and is in conversations with Cllr Martin Tighe and Bolton Council Leader Martyn Cox and residents.

Cllr Finney said: “Having not being able to get through, the HGVs are then backing out onto the road which is Church Street.

“This is causing a major hazard, and last week (Wednesday December 14) one HGV caused a traffic jam of up to one hour on Church Street whilst he had to back out onto the main road.

“It is becoming a danger and myself and Cllr Tighe are working on this.”

Former councillor and candidate for Westhoughton South Anne-Marie Watters says she will also find out about Anderby Walk and Wellington Street concerns.

Ann-Marie says that she will continue to chase for an update on whether signs can be put up on Holden Lea and Bamber Croft, and is in talks with Bolton Council leader Cllr Martyn Cox and Cllr Finney.

She added: “I think the council needs to act sooner rather than later.

“The sat navs are still sending them through Holden Lea and Bamber Croft.

“I am chasing it at the moment.”

After residents wrote to MP for Bolton West Chris Green regarding Holden Lea and Bamber Croft, he agreed to discuss the matter with the council to share the residents' concerns, requesting to put a sign up.
