Firefighters were called to a house in Farnworth after a blaze ripped through a bedroom.

The fire, which fire officers say was started by smoking materials, started at around 9pm last night.

Crews from Farnworth and Boltoon Central fire stations were mobilised to the blaze on Highfield Road.

Two adults and pets escaped the fire uninjured.

Crew Manager Chris Spary of Farnworth Fire Station said: “It was a fire that started in the bedroom, which was well developed with a lot of smoke showing on arrival.

“Four breathing apparatus’ and a hose reel were used. We were there for about an hour and a half.

“Nobody was hurt. Two adults and two pets were evacuated from the building before we arrived.”

Crew Manager Spary stressed that people should dispose of cigarette smoking materials properly, as they were what caused this fire.

People at the property believe the fire could have been caused by a lighter used to light a candle.

He continued: “The property was heavily smoke damaged throughout. The bedroom where the fire started was completely destroyed.

“There was no structural damage, firefighters managed to stop the fire spreading.”

Smoke from the fire also travelled into adjoining properties, which firefighters had to clear using fans.
