A Bolton swimming school will be expanding and offering lessons to more children allowing them to learn the lifesaving skill.

Bolton Swim School, run by Charlotte Wilcock and Harry Johnstone, currently runs swimming lessons from Canon Slade School in Bradshaw across the weekend and after lessons have proved to be popular, the duo will now be offering lessons in Sharples too.

From this Sunday, Bolton Swim School will be offering lessons to children aged two to 16 years old, from beginners to advance swimmers.

The idea behind the expansion of lessons is to teach swimmers slightly differently to how other local swim schools might teach their pupils.

Bolton Swim School put a lot of focus on swimming independently, keeping swimmers motivated through their fun teaching approach, continuously challenging the swimmers by making sure they actually get through lots of swimming, offering feedback in each lesson and also regularly awarding badges and certificates.

The teachers also report back to the parents with a summary at the end of each lesson to keep them updated on their child's progress.

Charlotte said: “Harry, myself and our team are really excited to be opening our doors at Sharples High School on January 15 and would love to let local parents know that they can start booking in lessons with us.

“And we're also happy to offer all new swimmers the opportunity to have their first lesson for free.

“We feel that with the high number of children who are unable to swim plus the number of pools closing down and summer holidays coming up, local parents would really benefit from hearing about our new lessons.

“Only four per cent of children are competent swimmers.

“Plus, almost 2,000 swimming pools could be lost forever by the end of the decade due to the high number of pools which were constructed in the 1960s and 1970s and are coming to the end of their lifespan, with not enough new facilities are being built to replace them.

“We want to be part of the change to give all local children in Bolton the opportunity to learn this lifesaving skill by offering affordable and enjoyable lessons for all ages and abilities.

“And with summer holidays coming up, we'll be putting a big focus on developing our swimmer's water safety awareness.”
