A PUB which was hit by a runaway lorry will cost more than £70,000 to repair.

A truck ran into the front of the Rose and Crown in Edgworth on May 21, after the driver forgot to apply the parking brake.

Part of the front wall of the 17th century building, in Bury Road, later collapsed.

Landlord Muzo Ozcelik said: "The building side of it will cost £70,000 but that does not take into account any fixtures and fittings and businesses losses.

"The roof and wall were damaged and need to be repaired.

"It is hoped the work can be started next week or the week after.

"I have been told it will take six to eight weeks to complete.

"Some of the rubble from the wall will be used in the repair but the rest of the stone will have to be found from somewhere else."

The wall collapsed when the trailer and the asphalt laying machine it was carrying were pulled from the building.

The pub re-opened a few days after the accident and all but a small part of the building can be used by customers.

A section of Bury Road, from the junction with Bolton Road to just past the pub, was shut for more than a week.

It is now open to single file traffic. Mr Ozcelik, aged 42, said: "Business is slow at the moment as people still think we are closed because of the scaffolding.

"Our regulars are coming in but others don't know whether we are open or not.

"Also some people don't realise the road is now open.

"We are open though and still serving drinks and food.

"The pub is clean and tidy inside and we will be getting back to normal as soon as we can."

After the accident, the driver of the lorry, owned by Atherton-based J Fisher and Sons, was suspended and retrained. He is now back on the road.
