A classic steam train which has its roots in Horwich was captured early this morning, Saturday, leaving from Bolton.

The Stanier Black 5 44932 arrived in Bolton Interchange at 8am this morning, where it stayed for 10 minutes before heading to Preston and stopping at Cumbria.

The 4932 was built in 1945 by the London, Midland, and Scottish (LMS) railway at Horwich Works, which is now known as Horwich Loco Industrial Estate.

After the 1948 nationalisation of Britain's railways, it was renumbered as 44932 by British Railways.

Henry Lisowski – who captured the images – said: “I knew it was coming as I saw a post to say it would be at Trinity Street station at 8am.

“I could hear it minutes before it appeared, and I could see the big cloud of steam.

“I have seen steam locos passing that way before - again usually early morning - but they sometimes they do not throw out as much steam.

“This one was quite spectacular first light.”

Locomotive construction continued at Horwich at a high standard for 10 years after nationalisation.

As many as 120 LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 tender engines were built at Horwich between 1945 and 1950 with 53 locos built by the LMS and 67 locos built by British Railways.

The railway works in Horwich continued in use as a works for other rolling stock up until it closed in December 1983.

Sir William Stanier originally designed the Black 5 – also known as the Class 5 Mixed Traffic – during his time as chief mechanical engineer for LMS.

The 5-MT 4-6-0 was first introduced in September 1934.

These locomotives became one of the most popular in Britain, with a total of 842 built.

The Black 5 No. 44932 is currently owned and operated by the West Coast Railway Company based in Carnforth and is painted in British Railways lined black livery.

Its service life was just under 23 years.
