Road users have been warned to expect delays after a motorway crash.

The collision was reported on the M62 between Junction 8 and Burtonwood and Junction 7 at Rainhill at around 6.15pm on Monday evening.

National Highways North West has warned that two of three lanes have had to be closed as a result and that motorway users can expect delays of around 45 minutes as a result.

A statement said: “The M62 westbound between Junction 8 Burtonwood and J7 Rainhill, lanes 1 and 2 (of 3) are closed due to a collision.

“There is currently approximately four miles of congestion on approach, causing delays of 45 minutes above usual journey times.”

The transport authority has warned people using the motorway or anyone who may be planning to travel over the course of the evening to make use of alternative route and to allow extra time for their journeys.

As yet no further details have been released about the nature of the collision or how many vehicles are believed to have been involved.

Anyone who is concerned about safety on the motorways or elsewhere on the roads can call the emergency services on 101 or 999 in the event of an emergency.

UPDATE: National Highways North West announced just after 8pm on Monday evening that all lanes had been reopened.
