Teachers in Bolton are set to walk out tomorrow as part of national strike action taken by members of National Education Union  (NEU)

The strike across England and Wales is over  pay.

Over 23,000 schools are set to be disrupted by the strikes this week, with further strikes set to take place on February 14, March 15, 16 and 28.

Dr Mary Bousted, joint General Secretary of the NEU, grew up in Bolton and attended St Osmund’s RC Primary School in Breightmet (now SS Osmund and Andrew RC) and later Mount St Joseph School.

She met with Education Secretary Gillian Keegan yesterday (Monday) in a bid to resolve the pay dispute - to no avail.

In a statement she said: “Gillian Keegan has squandered an opportunity to avoid strike action on Wednesday.

“The Government has been unwilling to seriously engage with the causes of strike action.

“Real-terms pay cuts and cuts in pay relativities are leading to a recruitment and retention crisis with which the Education Secretary so far seems incapable of getting a grip.

“Training targets are routinely missed, year on year. This is having consequences for learning, with disruption every day to children’s education.”
