Police have charged a man after a burglary in Bolton on Christmas day.

Officers say Weavers Court, a retirement property on Rothwell Street in near the centre of town, was broken into in the early hours of December 25, last year.

Following this David Murphy was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

The 21-year-old, of no fixed abode, was charged with burglary of a dwellig, aggravated vehicle taking without the owner's consent and driving without a licence or insurace.

He was also charged with criminal damage and theft for unrelated matters.

He is due to appear in Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court today.

Sergeant Sarah Dixon from GMP Bolton’s Neighbourhood Crime Team urged people to report burglaries.

She said: “Tackling burglary is a force priority for Greater Manchester Police and our officers are determined to ensure that offenders are brought to justice and victims of crime feel supported and safe.

Police revealed recently a new team in Bolton, consistinng of one detective inspector, two sergeants and 12 constables has been cracking down on burglary in the town.

Between May and November last year 276 arrests were made and 160 charges made for burglary, robbery and vehicle crimes.

In April last year there were 202 burglary offences reported, but by September police say that 85 offences were reported.
