A Wanderers footballer and his father have been given a date when they will be asked to formally enter their pleas to an assault allegation.

Midfielder Kyle Dempsey, 27, of Magnolia Way, Blackpool, a former Carlisle United player, is charged alongside his father Michael Dempsey, 50, of Whitecroft, Maryport with assaulting the same alleged victim.

Prosecutors say the incident that gave rise to the charges happened at Maryport Labour Club on July 16 last year.

Dempsey senior is also facing a criminal damage charge, relating to damaged allegedly caused to a door.

During a short hearing at Carlisle Crown Court, Judge Nicholas Barker adjourned the case for a plea hearing on March 1. Both defendants, who were legally represented, were granted bail until that hearing.

Judge Nicholas Barker directed both the prosecution and the defence lawyers to ensure certain deadlines linked to the administration of the case are met. The defendants spoke only to confirm their personal details.
