A couple enjoying the 'Good Life' eggs-pressed their surprise when one of their hens laid an egg-tra big egg!

Chris Shea, 30, has been keeping chickens in his garden in Bolton where he lives with his partner Kat for two years.

The pair have always wanted chickens of their own since they were children, just like the couple of the classic comedy The Good Life.

Chris said: “I thought, ‘wow, that's massive. I can't wait to show Kat’.

“My partner Kat and I always wanted chickens growing up, so when we got our own house, we got ourselves some,” he added.

“She said, ‘wow, that's a whopper’.

“And then when I was popping my coat under the stairs she asked if the chickens were all okay. I told her they were okay, none of them had a limp or anything.

Chris says that he and Kat usually eat the eggs that their hens lay, although or sometimes they deliver them to family.

“My dad, Phil, loves it when we pop round with some eggs on a Sunday morning,” he said.

This egg had an extra surprise in store. When Chris cracked it open to make his scrambled eggs he discovered not one yolk, but two.

“It was a double-yolker.” Chris said. He did admit, however, that “it tasted just like any other egg”.

At a time when bird flu is forcing prices of eggs up, Chris says that looking after chickens is “easy enough” and would recommend them to others.

He added: “We love them.

“Free eggs at a time when eggs are getting expensive is great, but they all have individual personalities as well.

“Henrietta is really cheeky whereas Sharon really just wants to be left alone in peace.”

“Sometimes you get rats in the garden because of the feed so you have to keep an eye out for those.”
