Thousands of people headed to a shopping centre in Bolton this weekend as an event for lovers of fantasy and superheroes took place in England for the first time.

The Big Glasgow Comic Page Comic Con has run in Scotland for a number of years.

But its organisers took to Market Place Shopping Centre in Bolton for their first event south of the border.

It got underway yesterday and returns today (Sunday) from 10am.

And it proved a success as lengthy queues formed in the centre of children wanting to get a picture with large sized Bumblebee from Transformers and Optimus Prime.

Elsewhere in the centre people could be seen dressed up as stormtrooper and a Jedi from Star Wars and Marvel’s antihero Deadpool.

There was also sales of comics, toys and art throughout the day.

Organiser Ian Bonar dressed up as Bumblebee during the course of the day as excited youngsters waited for a picture with him.

He said the event's first trip to England had been a success.

He said: “It is the first event we have had down south.

“It has been really good.

“We had 20,000 come to us in Gretna last week but this is a much bigger shopping centre.

“We did not know how popular it would be but we will aim to do another one here later in the year.

“We order our costumes in from abroad so it is not something you see every day, comics will always have their place and there are lots of artists taking part.”

One of those selling their art was Aliyah Islam, who was selling drawings from TV show Stranger Things.

The woman from Burnley said: “I have got into drawing in the last few years, I did it when I was younger but I really got into it in lockdown.

“This is the first time I have had my own table.

“I draw people from Stranger Things but I am looking to do more, probably Marvel.

“It is going well here.

“The key to drawing is just practice.”
