A student was arrested after an ‘imitation’ gun was taken onto a university campus in Bolton.

The incident was reported last Friday afternoon when the imitation weapon was reportedly taken onto the University of Bolton campus off Deane Road in the town centre.

University security staff and police were called at around 2.15pm and a student was arrested on suspicion suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm in a public place and suspicion of possession of Class B drugs.

A University of Bolton spokesperson said: "We can confirm that an incident involving an imitation firearm occurred on Friday 24 February on University grounds.

"The University's security procedure was immediately put in place and thanks to the vigilance of our security staff, police were called and attended rapidly.

“A student was detained.

"This was an isolated incident and the University assessed no ongoing risk to staff or students.

"The University co-operated fully with the police investigation."

No further incidents have been reported in the aftermath of the student being detained either from eyewitnesses at the university of from official sources.

A GMP spokesperson said: "At around 2.15pm on February 24 2023, officers were called to a report of an incident on Deane Road in Bolton.

"An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm in a public place and Class B drugs."
