A Family-run supermarket has reopened its doors and is ready to welcome back customers after a refurbishment.

The Costcutter on Kearsley Precinct is run as a franchise by brothers Kersheaup and Nilesh Vagadia with their mother Vanita.

They were on hand together last Friday for the store’s grand reopening alongside ward councillors Debbie Newall and Paul Heslop.

Cllr Newall said: “Both Cllr Heslop and I were delighted to accept the invitation to attend the opening of the refurbished Costcutter on Kearsley Precinct.”

She added: “The Vagadia family have had a presence on Kearsley precinct for nearly 30 years and are well and truly part of the fabric of the Kearsley community.

“The staff are all from the community with some working for the Vagadia family for over 20 years.”

The revamped Costcutter will now feature an incorporated Bargain Booze and has an agreement with the Co-op, which will continue to supply all its groceries.

Cllr Newall said: “It is nearly 40 years since the last Co-op closed in Kearsley and many people retain a loyalty to the brand but had to go Highfield in Farnworth, the nearest Co-op, for our family favourite Co-op 99 tea.

“The other innovative features about the new store are the concessions offered.

"Hot Carrs Pasties products are now offered along with freshly brewed coffee, even together as a £3 meal deal!

“It was particularly welcome to see meat products from the Kearsley-based Ryders Farm shop that has built up a steady but loyal following of customers over the years due to its quality products.”

Senior managers from Costcutters’ York headquarters came to Kearsley for the day to see how the Vagadia family and their staff’s efforts were paying off and to see for themselves how the concessions on offer were incorporated into the store design along with the company’s new logo.

The managers also helped to give out opening day offers including chickens given out with carrier bags of groceries for the first 50 customers.

Cllr Newall said: “There were smiles all round from customers including one man who with fortuitous timing walked away with a goody bag despite only walking in for a newspaper!”
