A food hub gathered to mark International Women’s Day and encouraged women to grow their own food.

The women of Bolton Diggers gathered at the Bolton Diggers Food Hub in Great Lever to highlight the global importance of women in food production.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation, women produce just over half of the world’s food.

In developing countries this climbs to 60-80 percent.

A spokesman for the group said: “I believe all food should be free anyway and this is a way of making that happen.

“Food growing is not just a leisure activity, it’s becoming a necessity.”

The Bolton News:

Women have a key role in global food security yet have poor access to credit, technology and insecure access to land.

In this country people are facing soaring prices of fruit and vegetables and marked shortages of these and other staple food items such as eggs.

Bolton Diggers wish to celebrate the role of women in food production and at a time of hardship which is particularly affecting low-income groups in towns like Bolton to encourage more women to take more control of their own food security and start growing their own fruit and vegetables.

International Women’s Day is looking at accelerating equality and empowerment.
