A Bolton teacher has been recognised for his work in the fight for equality and justice for all.

Robert Poole, who teaches at Sharples School, received the  Ron Todd Foundation Award for Social Justice for his work to make society a better place for all.

The Ron Todd Foundation was set up to honour the work of Ron Todd, the former General Secretary of the Transport and General Workers’ Union, which is now known as Unite the Union.

The award is given out annually.

Mr Poole said: “It’s amazing, it’s humbling, to be given such a prestigious award.

“It links into my core beliefs of equality and justice in society and it links in with the work I do within the trade union movement.

“To be recognised, it is fantastic.”

He continued: “I was nominated for my work with Strike Map. It’s about helping people and hopefully encouraging people to improve their own lives.

“One of our main aims is to encourage people to fight for what they see as being social justice in society.

“We’re a record of all the action that takes place across the country, as we realised there is no record of strike action taking place.

“We also want to encourage people to send messages of solidarity to each other who are on strike. To encourage people and realise this is something we can do.”

He added: “Ron Todd was a trade union leader, he did a lot of work regarding social justice. It’s the foundation that was set up on his death to continue his work.”

Mr Poole has been involved in the fight for education in recent weeks, whihc has seen teachers walk out in  strikes.
