The Bolton News readers have expressed their excitement after it emerged Primark is set to move from Crompton Place to Market Place.

The clothes store is due to move into the site of what was Debenhams after the department store closed for the last time around two years ago.

In an announcement this week, the council said the relocation was "a significant step" in its attempts to clear the area opposite the town hall for redevelopment, as a part of the Bolton Town Centre Masterplan.

Director of place at the council, Jon Dyson, said: "We are delighted that Primark has committed to a continued presence in the town centre, and at such a prime location. As shopping habits change, we are working to consolidate the retail offer around Market Place and create a town centre that also provides a mix of residential, hospitality and leisure.

"We continue to explore options for the future of Crompton Place and this is a significant step towards the regeneration of this part of town."

Mr Dyson's delight was shared by Alison Stewart, asset manager at Market Place owner Moorgarth Retail and Kari Rodgers, retail director at Primark UK.

Readers have shared their excitement on a post on social media with hundreds of "like" and "love" reactions and hundreds of comments and shares.

Jayne Harrison said: "It's about time. I've always said it should move into the old New Look but this is even better."

Lyn Robinson added: "Great I hope it's as big as Blackburn Primark. It'll save me a trip there."

However, not all readers were so positive.

Some reminded others of the losses to the town centre to such as Marks & Spencer next month.

Steve Allington said: "We're heralding this a success for the town? I must be on a different planet because I can't see how this is progress."

Vicky Black added: "Let's not pretend they're doing anybody any favours but themselves. Moving a retailer is not a win for Bolton."

Primark is set to open at Market Place in late 2024 or early the following year.
