Parents of children tucking into school meal in Bolton can rest assured that the food they are tucking into is not having a negative impact on the environment.

And Bolton Council School Meals service has strengthened its commitment to providing sustainable school meals after an audit carried out.

The local authority has successfully completed an audit by the Marine Stewardship Council, enabling the service to use the MSC logo.

The MSC is an international non-profit organisation on a mission to stop overfishing and they work with fisheries, seafood companies, retailers, and scientists to help protect the oceans around us and safeguard seafood supplies.

A product with the blue MSC ecolabel on it means people can trust where the fish or seafood comes from and that it will have been fished sustainably.

This helps retain fish numbers in the sea to ensure seafood is available for this and future generations.

The auditor visited six schools in Bolton and checked that school meals promote MSC fish on menus, store MSC fish appropriately, and that staff have been trained on MSC and where to purchase from.

Garry Parker, Bolton Council’s assistant director for environment services said: “Seafood is a healthy protein source for children.

“Serving MSC certified fish to school children provides them with a nutritious meal while also reducing impact on the ocean.”

The Bolton School Meals service provide catering to 94 primary and special schools across the borough.
