WE think this Looking Back picture will stir some memories for our readers of a popular street.

It was taken in 1952 from the corner of Bank Street and Bradshawgate in Bolton, looking down Churchgate to the Parish Church and it is a much quieter street than the busy one it is today.

On the right was the Theatre Royal and just behind is the building where The Bolton News office used to stand.

Just behind the war memorial, again on the right, is one of the oldest public houses in Britain, Ye Olde Man and Scythe.

Some of the buildings on the left have been demolished, including the old ABC cinema — which made way for the tax office, the Varsity pub and Travel House.

One other thing to notice is that the smooth road surface in the picture has now replaced by cobbles.

Get in touch to tell us your memories of the theatre, cinema and businesses on Churchgate and what shops you can spot. Email robert.kelly@nqnw.co.uk and we will feature them in Looking Back in the next few weeks.
