A road remains closed this morning after a bus hit a bridge this evening.

Pictures show how the roof of the double decker bus has been sliced off in the strike which happened on Barton Lane in Eccles.

A spokesman for GMP Traffic said at the time: "Barton Lane, Eccles is currently closed both ways due to a bridge strike by a bus.

"The road will remain closed until the Ports Authority can attend and assess / repair any damage. Please avoid and plan an alternative route as there may be subsequent local delays. (Post: 2145hrs)."

Today the latest information on INRIX, the highways information site, said: "Barton Lane both ways closed due to bridge struck by vehicle between Trafford Road and B5211 Redclyffe Road. Traffic is coping well. The road has been shut since last night after the top deck of a double decker bus hit the canal bridge. Diversion: Bus Service 52."

Earlier this year the M61 Southbound was closed after a bridge was struck by a vehicle between J2 and J1 M60 J15 (Swinton Interchange).

There is no time for when Barton Road will be open to traffic.

Motorists are asked to keep an eye on the latest traffic information or seek alternative routes.
