A husband who lost his wife to cancer has chanelled his grief into helping others.

It was 10-years-ago Pete Wallroth's wife Mair died from breast cancer. The couple were told of the devastating diagnosis while Mair was pregnant.

Her son Merlin, who is now 10-years-old, was born healthy, while Mair underwent treatment for the cancer and tragically died at the age of just 41.

Pete, from Glossop, started the charity Mummy’s Star in Mair's memory.

And in June The Mummy’s Star Charity Ball will take place at the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel in Manchester on Saturday, June 17, marking the organisation's 10-year anniversary.

The Bolton News:

It will be hosted by Coronation Street star Victoria Ekanoye from Bury who has said it was a charity close to her heart after she was diagnosed with breast cancer when pregnant with son, Theo.

Pete said: “We wanted to make sure something was there for families in the same situation as us.

“You go along to an appointment and look forward to the birth but with news like having cancer, you question whether you can continue with the pregnancy.

“It can be very stressful and it’s everything that you take for granted as a parent.”

Merlin was delivered healthy and without any complications, but Mair was weak and needed support.

The Bolton News:

Pete said: “Merlin was beautiful when he arrived but Mair was having chemotherapy and could no longer do day-to-day things.

“So, she did not have that time with Merlin that parents look forward to.”

Mair died in December  2012, when Merlin was just 10 weeks old and her daughter Martha was three.

Becoming a single dad and raising their son without Mair, Pete did not want another family to go through it alone.

He said: “I wanted to channel the grief into something good that would help others.

“With the charity, the focus remains that they are pregnant, that all their questions are being answered, care at home is good and what financial support they might need.”

Financial support includes travelling costs and anything that helps the family at home.

Pete said: “The event will raise awareness, for people to hear about our work and to get involved.

“It’s a celebration as well and how people can support us.”
