A birthday card from the King dropped through the letterbox of Helena Hargreaves to mark her 100th birthday.

Helena has lived in Bradshaw all her life and previously worked in the accounts department for Warburtons.

Her uncle-in-law Clive Fothergill says she has continued to stay active, look after herself and eats well.

He said: “She’s still excellent with numbers and remembers telephone numbers in her head and enjoys doing crosswords in The Bolton News - that’s how she keeps going.

“She has always been bright.

“She looks after herself with the help of friends and family helping with the shopping.

“Helena is very resilient.”

Clive says that Helena had been looking forward to receiving a special birthday card from King Charles III and the Queen Consort Camilla.

Clive said: “She was looking forward to a special birthday card from King Charles and when she did, she was delighted to show everyone her special birthday card.”

Helena shared her birthday with close family and friends at the Astley Bank Hotel, in Darwen, last Sunday (April 16) where they had a party.

Clive said: “We had a family gathering with 25 people who were family and friends.

“And it was a really memorable birthday, and she enjoyed it very much.

“It’s very significant and she’s still quite active.”

Helena was also part of the Auxiliary Territorial Service, which started out as a voluntary organisation before merging into the Women’s Royal Army Corps.

She also knits and makes hats and scarfs for a charity that are then taken to Romania.

Helena’s aunty Kathleen said: “She is a very independent, strong, and lovely lady, and very helpful to other people.

“She is really remarkable for her age.”
