An inquest opened into the death of a 30-year-old man who was struck by a train between Bolton and Wigan.
Bradley Lomax, from Westhoughton, was discovered dead on the line from Daisy Hill to Hindley on March 24.
On Wednesday, at Bolton Coroner's Court, police coroner's officer Andrew Pickles told coroner Professor Dr Alan Walsh about the circumstances of the death.
He said the emergency services attended but Mr Lomax, an engineer who lived on Amber Grove, was declared dead at the scene.
Mr Pickles said: "Mr Lomax had been reported missing to Greater Manchester Police by the family."
A postmortem suggested Mr Lomax died from "dramatic injuries consistent with a collision".
Dr Walsh asked for information in the form of statements from a GP and other community services, as well as from British Transport Police and Greater Manchester Police. He adjourned the inquest until October 2.
