A trio of local famous faces will be back on TV tonight as a I'm a Celebrity is back — with a difference.

Bolton actress Helen Flanagan, boxer Amir Khan and Happy Monday's Shaun Ryder, from down the road in Little Hulton, are three of the contestants taking part in a bid to be name the first "I'm A Celebrity Legend".

Nine celebrities are making an an epic return to test themselves all over again in a new South African setting.

Hosting duo Ant and Dec return to the helm.

Amir is one of the first to arrive in camp on whom it isn’t lost that their welcome refreshments are strawberry flavoured, having infamously ‘stolen’ strawberries during his first time on the show.

Amir admits: “Everywhere I go now people give me a bowl of strawberries…”

He learns he will face a staggering 50m drop over the edge of an imposing South African mountain.

Helen arrives by helicopter

She said: “I think the public would probably know me best for being an absolute wimp at the trials… looking back now I can see how I was a bit of a drama queen… I’m so determined to make my girls proud as well. I won’t be shouting I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!”

After listening to the tape recorder instructions she and her camp mates see suspended, high above the Savannah, a row of giant, swinging, red balls - dubbed Newton’s Cradle - that one of them must tether together, before the other two attempt to use them as a bridge. At the end of the balls, they must each leap out and try and catch their hanging star, to earn further meals for camp.

Helen says: “I wish I was watching this at home instead of actually doing it.”

Over the past two decades, the ITV reality series has featured an array of big names with several making a return, including the only winner of the show former professional cricketer Phil Tufnell who was crowned king of the jungle in 2003.

Other sport stars include former professional javelin thrower Fatima Whitbread – who is remembered by many for having a cockroach stuck up her nose during a trial in 2011.

US model and TV personality Janice Dickinson and Paul Burrell, the former butler to Diana, Princess of Wales are returning

The line-up also includes Diversity star and Kiss FM DJ Jordan Banjo, and former Countdown star Carol Vorderman – who both starred in the 2016 version of the show together.

Unlike the original format, the first I’m A Celebrity Legend will not feature a public vote. Instead the celebrities will be competing against one another to be crowned the legend.

I’m A Celebrity… South Africa will air on ITV1 and ITVX tonight at 9pm.
